Kate Sandwhich....
Lil' Kate - Dusty- Kate = one lucky boy in a Kate sandwhich
Katie and Dusty arrived in London on Tuesday, May 9th and after a little confusion, Katie R. calling mom, mom calling me, me calling mom and me trying to call Katie...I found em! Can't tell you how great it was to finally have them here.
Our first night we went to my favorite mexican restraunt (Texas Embassy...where Dusty enlightened me to the fact that they do have free refills...a rare find in London) and then scored tickets to the musical Guys and Dolls. None of us had any idea as to what the show was about (we figured it might have something to do with Guys and Dolls since we're a pretty quick group) and it turned out to be absolutely fabulous. It is competing for one of my favorite musicals right now. If you'd like a full recap of the show my suggestion would be to not ask Dusty as he slept through most of it...waking up to clap every now and then. After the show, we went to my favorite ice cream place. Ask Katie and Dusty for their opinion, but I'd be shocked if they told you anything besides that it was amazing. Shocked.
Having Katie and Dusty stay was like one big slumber party. Too bad I didn't take pictures of my room (if you could see it underneath luggage, my stuff and the blow up mattress). But you can't beat pillow talk : ).
Courtesy of Mom and Pat, we went on a day trip that literally lasted the entire day. We went to a castle, the birth place of William Shakespear and Oxford University. The day was way fun...
I'd like it to be noted that I told Dusy that it was not ok to go behind to rope to sit on the cannon.
The castle was fully furnished and boasted towers, dungeons, catapults, men shooting bow and arrows and a very scary ghost tour. As the Lonepine Haunted Corn Maze Witch...I'm not ashamed to admit that Katie had to hold my hand and that I do scream like a girl.
Oxford University was absolutely gorgeous. It's interesting the way it is run- students never take classes outside of their "school" (ex: school of business).
Two fun things about Oxford University: First, it was the inspiration for the movie Alice in Wonderland. Second, Harry Potter was filmed there.
Above is the door from the movie that leads into the garden.
And this is the dining room/hall from Harry Potter. After the first movie, they built their own dining hall to use for the following films. It's crazy though...the students at Oxford eat all their meals in here.
Official report for Mom and Pat in regards to the day trip: We give it 6 thumbs up (notice 4 thumbs between Katie and Dusty...and imagine two from me)
We ended the day at my noodle bar (pretty much the best place in London). I can't take these love birds anywhere...
And for a little more Harry Potter...while Katie and Dusty were here, we found Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross Train Station.
On Mother's Day we went to Camden Town (largest market in London), a service at Westminster Abbey and movie night at my old hostel where they were playing Brokeback Mountain. Interesting movie...I'll leave it at that. Here's us calling our mum...
Katie was instructed by our sister Meg to have a "Pimms" while in London. And that's just what she did...and this is the proof.
On their last full day in London, I dragged Katie and Dusty to just about every major tourist site in London. I somewhat feel bad about this as it was a long, long day. But as Erica likes to say, Go Big or Go Home. Now, I can't show pictures from everything we did that day but here are some of the highlights.
And we have more than one picture taken by Dusty of Katie and I laughing about pictures we had taken...
And it's more big guns for Dusty. At least he had the sense not to sit on this one..
I'm ashamed to admit that I gave him the idea that it was ok to sit on this one (he saw me do it...I'm such a poor example. I'll work on it)
Well, I didn't quite say when I would start working on it...
But this angle did allow me to capture this fabulous picture... (note to Katie and Dusty: this picture is frame-worthy)
And we broke the rules once more...we had a Yorkie candy bar. If you double click on this picture it should enlarge on your screen. You'll see that the wrapper reads YORKIE and then It's Not for Girls! underneath. Now I have followed this rule and even sent the candy bar to my friend Thayer asking for a report on its taste. But Katie Rafferty is rather daring and she had Dusty purchase the candy bar. Come to find out, the thing is a solid chocolate bar...which is hypothetically what every girl would want. I thought we should sue for either false advertising or gender discrimination...
I feel like we accomplished quite a lot of fun while Katie and Dusty were here...and they found time to go to Paris and get engaged (see post below).
Side note to Katie and Dusty: I can't tell you how much I enjoyed having you here and how much I sincerely appreciate the effort, time and money that you invested to come see what my life is like over here. Much, much love to you both.
